Washington House Passes Resolution To Establish Task Force On Sexual Harassment

Washington lawmakers are taking steps to address sexual harassment at the state Capitol. The House passed a resolution Thursday to establish a task force on sexual harassment. Members will include lawmakers, lobbyists and staff.

State Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self said the task force will aim to create a more respectful work environment at the Capitol.

“We want to produce a safe climate where anybody that feels unsafe, disrespected, feels harassed can come up and safely speak,” she said.

Among other things, the task force will consider adoption of a code of conduct and further training on preventing sexual harassment.

The resolution comes after more than 200 women including lobbyists and lawmakers signed a letter in November calling for a change in the Capitol culture. The resolution now heads to the Senate.
