The first in a series of broadcast concerts from Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend will air on this episode of Jazz Northwest. The opening Friday evening concert of the 45th annual festival features the duo of clarinetist Anat Cohen and seven string guitarist Marçello Goncalves, recorded in McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.
Anat Cohen and Marçello Goncalves met in Brazil while the former was touring there. They formed a friendship that led to recording an album Outra Coisas, featuring orchestral music of Moacir Santos arranged by Gonçalves for guitar and clarinet. They play some of that music here, as well as songs by Milton Nascimento and Anat Cohen. Anat and Marçello were both on the faculty of the weeklong Jazz Workshop that precedes the public concerts in the last weekend of July.
The artistic director for Jazz Port Townsend is John Clayton, the jazz program manager is Gregg Miller, and Rob Birman is the executive director of Centrum.
Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple, Google or Spotify.
