The Tiptons Saxophone Quartet And Drums In Concert

The Tiptons at The Seattle Art Museum's Art of Jazz series.

The Tiptons have been playing as a saxophone quartet for over 25 years.  Originally known as The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, the quartet was named for saxophonist and pianist Billy Tipton who lived life as a man but after his death was found to be a woman.

Currently on a West Coast tour, The Tiptons stopped in Seattle to play a concert in the "Art of Jazz" series presented by Earshot at The Seattle Art Museum.  The concert was recorded and an hour of highlights will air on "Jazz Northwest" on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m. Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streaming at KPLU

The Tiptons Sax Quartet today actually includes five members with the addition of drummer Tarik Abouzied. Their music is wide-ranging, from a riffing big band sax section to Balkan dance music, klezmer, soul and funk and more.  They have made a dozen recordings.  The present group includes (as pictured from left) Tarik Abouzed, Tina Richerson, Sue Orfield, Amy Denio and Jessica Lurie.

The "Art of Jazz" series is presented monthly at The Seattle Art Museum and coordinated by Earshot Jazz with support from 88.5 KPLU.  Next in the series is Spanish pianist Chano Domíguez who combines his Flamenco heritage with his love of jazz.  He'll play a solo concert on April 14 at 5:30.

"Jazz Northwest" is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU. The program airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Pacific and streams worldwide at KPLU. After broadcast, programs are archived for streaming at Jazz Northwest
