Clarence Acox is a professional drummer, a widely-heralded teacher who leads the award-winning Garfield Jazz Ensemble, and serves as co-director of The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. He was also the drummer for the 27-year run of a jazz quartet at The New Orleans Creole Restaurant. Legendary trumpet and tenor saxophonist Floyd Standifer led the group until he died in 2007. Clarence Acox renamed it The Legacy Quartet in honor of Floyd with various horn players rotating in his place. He continued the tradition until the restaurant closed in 2013.
This Art of Jazz concert presented by Earshot Jazz, reassembled the quartet at the Seattle Art Museum, a few blocks up First Avenue from the Pioneer Square spot where it played Wednesday nights for 27 years. The quartet includes saxophonist Tony Rondolone, Bill Anschell, piano, Phil Sparks, bass and Clarence Acox on drums. They play standards and range from swing to bop to movie themes for a large appreciative audience, many of whom first heard the group at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant.
Art of Jazz concerts are presented on the second Thursday of each month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. by the Seattle Art Museum and coordinated by Earshot Jazz, John Gilbreath, Executive Director.
Next month's concert will feature the young quartet Industrial Revelation, winner of several awards from Earshot and The Stranger. Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streaming at kplu.org. The program is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU. Next week's show includes a preview of the PDX Jazz Festival in Portland, February 18-28.
