Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Billy Strayhorn Centennial In Concert Broadcast On KPLU

Composer Billy Strayhorn was born 100 years ago, November 29, 1915, and his music was played in three concerts this month by The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra co-directed by Clarence Acox and Michael Brockman. Highlights from one of those concerts will air on Jazz Northwest this Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and  Special guests for the concert include David Hajdu, author of "Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn", and saxophonist Roxy Coss, formerly of Seattle now active on the New York scene.

Billy Strayhorn worked hand-in-hand with Duke Ellington on some of their most loved and enduring music including individual songs and suites of music such as Such Sweet Thunder  and The Far East Suite.  Music from those suites as well as some of Strayhorn's enduring songs including Lush Life and Chelsea Bridge are among those played in this hour-long concert broadcast, recorded live at The Kirkland Performance Center.  

Jazz Northwest  is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and  The program airs each Sunday at 2 PM Pacific and streams simultaneously at  Archives of past programs are available as streaming podcasts at   Some additional music from this concert will air on Jazz Northwest next Sunday, December 6.

Future shows will include Line-Up with Mark Taylor and Dawn Clement from Tula's (Dec.13) and The Marc Seales Trio from The Seattle Art Museum's Art of Jazz series presented by Earshot.  Additional Earshot Festival concert broadcasts are also slated for early next year on Jazz Northwest.

Jim has been a fixture on Seattle radio since 1961. He was the host of Jazz After Hours on Public Radio International from 1984-2014. Currently Jim has been producing Jazz Northwest for KNKX since 1988. This weekly program focuses on the regional jazz scene and frequently includes performances Jim records on location for Jazz Northwest.
