Bassist and composer Evan Flory-Barnes is the Featured Seattle Artist at this year's Earshot Jazz Festival and is playing six concerts at various locations during the festival, each with a different ensemble and distinct music.
This Sunday, November 4 on Jazz Northwest (2 PM PST on 88.5 KPLU), Evan Flory-Barnes leads a quartet, Threat of Beauty, in a chamber jazz concert recorded at The Seattle Art Museum during October. The musicians joining the leader and composer include Beth Fleenor, clarinet, Jacques Willis, vibraharp, and Eric Peters, percussion.
Evan Flory-Barnes grew up in Seattle and attended Garfield High School where he was in the orchestra program, and at the University of Washington in the jazz program. He's interested in many forms of music, though he seems to prefer blurring the lines between genres and using what ever interests and inspires him in his own music. He's a prolific composer and conceives music for everything from solo bass and duos with other instruments to his large scale work for orchestra and 10 dancers Acknowledgement of a Celebration which premiered at last year's Earshot Jazz Festival.
Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU. A podcast of each program is available at kplu.org following the air date.
