Jazz Caliente: Experience live Latin jazz!

March 2019 is going to be an extraordinary month for live music, with performances by local favorites and internationally renowned masters of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban jazz. Here's the update, and a peek beyond March, too. Click on the links for details and ticket information.

Celebrate Brazilian Carnaval (Mardi Gras) on Saturday, March 2, at the Royal Room with the Entremundos Big Band, Tudo Beleza dancers, and a capoeira demonstration. And if you didn't get enough Carnaval, Show Brazil's 25th Carnaval takes over The Crocodile on March 9.

Fresh from his Grammy win with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Carlos Cascante brings his Tumbao to Tula'son March 7. Also on March 7, in Bellevue, Tango with the Ben Thomas Trio at Resonance at SOMA Towers.

The March Art of Jazz concert at the Seattle Art Museum features Spanish pianist/composer Marina Albero with bassist Jeff Johnson at 5:30 p.m. on Thurday, March 14. 

The charismatic Cuban vocalist and composer Daymé Arocena returns to Seattle on March 16, at the Meany Center for the Performing Arts.  Then she'll enchant Tacoma on March 17 at the Rialto Theater.

The Global Rhythms series at Town Hall Seattle hosts the energetic and progressive Pedrito Martinez Group on March 18This show has been moved to the Broadway Performance Hall at Seattle Central College.

Cuban-born composer and wizard of the keyboards, Omar Sosa plays the Triple Door on March 19 with his Transparent Water Trio, which includes Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles and Senegalese kora player and vocalist Seckou Keita.

The Royal Room's "Piano Starts Here"series continues on March 20, with a tribute to three pianists known for mixing jazz with music from their Afro-Caribbean heritage: Cuban Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Panamanian Danilo Pérez and Dominican Michel Camilo. Performers will be Evan Captain, Nelda Swiggett, Dylan Hayes, Jake Sele and Alex Guilbert.

The Eastside Jazz Club presents distinctive, joyful Brazilian jazz from the Jovino Santos Neto Quintetoon March 21 at Resonance at SOMA Towers in Bellevue.

But wait, there's more! From April onward, upcoming shows of note include: 

  • Pianist Danilo Pérez with the University of Puget Sound Jazz band
  • Mandolinist Danilo Brito plays Brazilian choro at Edmond Center for the Arts
  • Kiki Valera and Cubache at the Royal Room
  • The Rumba Kings debut their new show at Kirkland Performance Center
  • The guest artist for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra concerts in April is Cuban drummer and educator Ignacio Berroa, a seasoned performer who is a master of both jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
  • Ann Reynold's Clave Gringa celebrate the release of their new CD at the Royal Room
  • Juan de Marcos and the Afro Cuban All Stars at Edmonds Center for the Arts
  • Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Septet at the Triple Door
  • The Rumba Kings CD Release show at the Triple Door
