KNKX Student DJ Aaron Korver

Abe Beeson

Sixteen year-old Aaron Korver plays piano with the Roosevelt High School jazz band.  He shares an hour of his favorite jazz with Abe Beeson on September 7 from 8-9 p.m.

Hometown: Tokyo, Japan

Which instrument do you play and why?  I play piano, because I have always believed that the piano player has the most influence on a piece, except maybe the drummer. The piano can represent the melody, harmony, and rhythm of a piece. This makes it the instrument with the most freedom.

What’s your all-time favorite jazz piece?  “Beatrice,” by Sam Rivers.

Who is your jazz hero?  Oscar Peterson.

Why jazz?  Jazz is one of the most raw and unfiltered ways to express yourself. If you hear it in your head, you play it. All the emotion comes through your instrument and the tune.

Aaron's playlist for September 7, 8-9 p.m.:

“ARMANDO’S RHUMBA” - CHICK COREA (My Spanish Heart)

“ANTHROPOLOGY” - BRAD MEHLDAU (When I Fall In Love)

“BIJI” - SONNY ROLLINS (Road Songs Vol 3)

“SUNDAY” - STAN GETZ (Stan Getz & the Oscar Peterson Trio)

“BETTER GET HIT IN YOUR SOUL” - CHARLES MINGUS (Mingus Ah Um)

“MACK THE KNIFE” - ELLA FITZGERALD (Ella In Berlin)

“SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE” - CEDAR WALTON (V.I.P. Trio: Standards)

“BUD POWELL” - CHICK COREA (Forever)
