Pianist Kenny Barron performed an intimate solo set at the 2017 TD Vanvouver International Jazz Festival Sunday evening, June 25, 2017.

At this year’s TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, KNKX jazz host Abe Beeson had an opportunity to speak with the great jazz pianist Kenny Barron.

Now in his 70s, Mr Barron was generous in telling us about his long, exciting career in jazz. From following his older brother from Philadelphia to New York City where he met and worked with James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie, to his own career as a leader beginning in the '70s, to his famous work in Stan Getz last bands, and the young dynamos in his new Grammy nominated trio, Kenny Barron hasn’t been completely successful in his desire to avoid “drawing attention.”

The crowd at the Kay Meek Centre in West Vancouver was treated to a glorious pair of solo piano sets, and we’re thrilled to share with you Abe’s conversation with Mr Barron just before the concert.

Check out Abe Beeson's recap of the 2017 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival here

Abe grew up in Western Washington, a third generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
