Jazz Caliente: Some Northwest Favorites

sonando.org
Sonando

Get to know two of the local Latin jazz groups featured this week on Saturday Jazz Caliente: Sonando and the vintage Brazilian jazz outfit called Choroloco.

Sonando was founded in 1990 by Fred Hoadley and Lary Barilleau to explore new directions in the blending of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz.

Sonando's repertoire includes traditional and modern interpretations of various Afro-Cuban styles, as well as their signature Latin jazz. They often perform on folkloric instruments such as bata drums, marimbula, tres, congas, & shekere, along with modern jazz instruments like flute, sax, trombone, piano, bass, and drum set.

Sonando usually performs on the third Thursday of the month at Tula's in Seattle, and they'll be there on January 19.  Here they take on the complex music of Charles Mingus:

Choroloco focuses on the essentially Brazilian style of music, choro, which is highly improvised and contains many influences from around the world.  Choro is the result of European dances meeting African rhythms, and it was the most popular music in Brazil from the 1920s into the 1950s.

Choroloco's next scheduled performance is a concert and lecture at Seattle Pacific University on January 27.  Here's a sample:
