"Across the West and Toward the North: Norwegian and American Landscape Photography"

Across the West and Toward the North: Norwegian and American Landscape Photography, an exhibition that investigates and compares how photographers in Norway and America responded to seeing the resulting effects of mapping and exploration. Photography in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries frequently conformed and advanced along with infrastructure changes, tourism influx, changed views of the landscape and more, and works showcased in this exhibition explore those similarities in changes. Works by Scandinavian photographers and American photographers will be presented alongside each other making the similarities in subject and style of Norwegian and American photographic practices apparent, while also recognizing their historical distinctions. This exhibition will be addressing the issues of land occupation, immigration, nation-building, and the representation of Inigenous cultures in both countries. This exhibition will be challenging the notion of American exceptionalism, asking both Norwegian and American audiences to recognize the compelling similarities between their histories.
