NW Folklife is proud to announce SuperFolk: The Cypher, an afternoon celebrating the folk of Hip-Hop. On October 14, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Judkins Park in Seattle, NW Folklife pays homage to Hip-Hop as an American art form deeply rooted in folk traditions. This event is sponsored by The City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and Seattle Parks and Recreation.

SuperFolk: The Cypher promises an unforgettable experience for attendees of all ages, featuring an afternoon of exciting activities:

Beyond the festivities, SuperFolk: The Cypher also provides an opportunity to dive deep into Hip-Hop’s culture and rich history. NW Folklife Artistic Director shares, “While we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop as a distinct genre, the roots of Hip-Hop are ancient. The Cypher, the Dozens, call-and-response, rhyme structure, colorful fashion, dance battles, and even BBQ all have roots that extend back in the culture. This event celebrates Hip-hop as a folk sta, and we’re excited to showcase that!” The event will take place at Judkins Park within Seattle's Central District, a historically Black community with a profound legacy of Black culture and history.
