Celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Radical Poet & Educator Merle Woo: On the Front Line of Freedom
This special meeting will feature a tribute to Merle Woo, whose battles for free speech and to save ethnic studies resonate with the current struggles being waged on university campuses. In the 1980s, Woo won two multi-discrimination cases against UC Berkeley as a socialist feminist, unionist, and out lesbian. Pinay activist Annaliza Torres will connect Woo’s story with the experience of her own family’s organizing of Filipino cannery workers in the Pacific Northwest, both of which hold lessons and inspiration for today.
