It's not yet autumn, but it is what's known as the "shoulder season": that span of time when there are fewer people taking vacations, but when much of the visitor infrastructure is still running.
This week on "Going Places," KNKX travel expert Matthew Brumley says this is prime time for locals to plan an outing.
"The weather is still spectacular," he said. "But at the same time, so many of the tourists who are visiting relatives and wanting to see Seattle and using it as a gateway for exploring the Northwest and Alaska have gone home."
Brumley's favorites include the Hoh Rainforest, the Washington Arboretum in Seattle, Victoria, and Olympic National Park.
