Sports with Art Thiel

Covering all the major professional sports teams in Seattle as well as the University of Washington and Washington State University. Kirsten and Art also talk about the business of sports, such as the proposal to build a new arena in Seattle. Other issues they've discussed include head injuries in sports and the crackdown on domestic violence.

Thiel offers a unique and informed perspective to KNKX listeners. His philosophy for his commentary on KNKX is to give the casual sports fan "enough information to be interesting at a party."

The Mariners are moving quickly to get ready for a shortened 2020 season. Major League Baseball announced this week that all teams will report to their home cities by July 1. The stage is set for Major League Soccer to resume play this year. A tournament begins next month in Orlando. The defending champion Seattle Sounders were given the top seed in a group that features other Western Conference clubs FC Dallas, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the San Jose Earthquakes. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have an impact on the sports world. Major League Soccer has further postponed its 2020 season for eight more weeks. On Thursday, the league said it remains focused on playing the entire season and that it's "evaluating all options."

Meanwhile, the National Football League has not had to take any action regarding its season, at least not yet. And the league actually conducted business this week. KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel talked about that with Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick.

With the novel coronavirus outbreak continuing to grow in the Seattle area, a lot of people are working from home and rethinking large public gatherings. Right now, Saturday night's soccer match between the Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew is still happening at CenturyLink Field. Fans who do attend will find additional hand sanitizer stations and cleaning wipes at concession stands.

In a new development in the cheating scandal that has rocked Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles City Council has passed a measure asking the league to award the Dodgers the 2017 and 2018 World Series titles. 

LA lost the World Series in 2017 to the Houston Astros, who were found to have cheated by using technology to steal pitching signs. The Boston Red Sox also are being investigated for this; the Dodgers lost the title to them in 2018.

KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel says the council's move is "symbolic of the rage going on in baseball." He talked with Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick about the scandal, which involves one of the Mariners' division rivals.

"It's a deal that represents moving forward both from a WNBA perspective, but also in general, for women in sports and society." That's how Seattle Storm veteran Sue Bird described, in an interview with The Seattle Times, the tentative labor agreement reached this week between the WNBA and its players union.

Bird is a member of the Players Association executive committee. The eight-year contract still needs approval from the league's board of governors, but KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel told Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick that it's a big improvement.
