As part of their Tuesday Film Series, Tacoma's Grand Cinema will be showing  Django on February 6.

No, definitely not the one with cowboy hats and six-shooters. This beautifully constructed French film directed by Etienne Comar is about the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.

After more than a quarter century, that Mighty Engine of Rhythm still swings like mad. Pearl Django’s KNKX studio session hit the ground running with Floyd Hoyt Rides Again, from their new CD With Friends Like These

Written by Pearl Django guitarist Tim Lerch, it’s named for one of the many noms de jazz of founding member Dudley Hill.

Fiddler Michael Gray says some of Dudley’s other aliases were The New Johnny Sands, and Michael’s personal favorite, H. Burnell Delahoopay.

The country celebrates Independence Day on Tuesday, and seeing as jazz is a music based on freedom, why not celebrate jazz with KNKX a day early at our Jazz On A Summer's Day party at the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks Monday afternoon.

Back in 1999, and out of nowhere, the KNKX (then ‘KPLU’) music department received a CD called "About Time" by a mandolin player named Don Stiernberg.  Frankly, it didn’t look all that promising but, of course, we gave it a listen.  To our collective surprise, it was delightful and we began playing it on the air, much to the delight of our listeners.  That was the first (and almost the last) time we heard from the guy.

KPLU rang in the new year of 2015 with a studio session featuring some old friends of the station who are also some of Seattle’s finest jazz musicians: Pearl Django and Gail Pettis.

Pearl Django has long been regarded as one of America’s finest gypsy jazz bands. Gail is a two-time recipient of the Earshot Jazz ‘Jazz Vocalist Of The Year’ award.

In this studio session hosted by Abe Beeson, they treated us to three great tunes and told us what 2015 has in store for them.

Recently, guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli visited Seattle to play a series of shows with Northwest gypsy jazz band, Pearl Django. On a cold January day, they all came into the KPLU studios to play… and things warmed up fast.

Martin Taylor is widely considered to be one of today’s finest solo jazz guitarists. While still in his early 20’s, he was introduced to the world’s jazz audience as the guitarist with Stephane Grappelli, a gypsy-jazz violinist and co-founder (along with Django Reinhardt) of the Quintette du Hot Club de France.
