Against the backdrop of a recent coronavirus outbreak that sickened dozens of inmates, a new report calls for King County jails to avoid holding people in two-person cells because the practice could lead to a continued decrease in violence.

The King County Council is frustrated that some teens are still being put in solitary confinement a year and a half after the council passed an ordinance banning the practice in local jails. At a briefing, council members vented their frustration to the staff of King County Executive Dow Constantine.

This summer, jails in King County expanded offerings for medically-assisted treatment to help people with addictions.

The jails have been providing methadone treatments through a third-party vendor. In June, officials added another medication called buprenorphine.

It’s a place with plenty of vacancies. And the price might be right—about $130 a night.

But you probably don’t want to book a room.

I’m talking about the King County Jail where there are now a lot more beds than inmates.

Red jumpsuits might be the usual jail uniform in King County. But a new policy has the jail issuing headscarves and yamulkes to inmates.

Two Renton officers have been demoted for posting a cartoon to YouTube that makes fun of the staff and policies of a new jail in South King County.

Deputy Police Chief, Charles Marsalisi and police sergeant Bill Judd, were each knocked down a rank after their involvement in the video came to light.

It could be two decades before Seattle needs more jail beds for its misdemeanor inmates. City and King County leaders say that’s the expected result of a new agreement.

The deal extends an arrangement the city and county struck last year to house some of Seattle’s jail population in the county’s downtown facility. That brought an end to a controversial search for a new city jail site.

Mayor Mike McGinn says he’s glad that’s off the table for now:

Three inmates have committed suicide in the King County jail in the past few weeks. The latest was a 33 year old man who died at Harborview Medical Center. The robbery suspect was found hanging in his cell on September 20.

The King County Correctional Facility has been cited in the past for failing to prevent suicide.

Back in 2007, the United States Department of Justice investigated the King County jail and issued a blistering report saying safety and health conditions were so substandard that they amounted to a violation of inmates civil rights.
