As your humble New Cool host, I'm out and about catching live jazz on a regular schedule. In fact, when I miss a show I feel a little guilty. So, while I'm out of town for a couple weeks, do me and yourself a favor. Enjoy some of the fantastic modern jazz concerts, featuring a ton of heavy-hitting drummers, heating up mid-winter in the Northwest.

The bill is set at Seattle's Nectar Lounge Thursday, Jan. 30. The South Sound sequel follows Jan. 31 at Rhythm & Rye in Olympia. A two-fisted organ trio battle pitting our hometown heroes McTuff facing off in musical combat with Portland's Trio Subtonic. The New Cool has the tale of the tape and we'll give away tickets during the radio show Saturday afternoon.

With a new single and accompanying video just released, and more recordings nearly ready to share, Tacoma's progressive jazz quartet Velocity are shifting into a higher gear. I caught the band at Seattle's Seamonster Lounge earlier this week to ask them about the new release and their plans for the summer.

Autumn in the Seattle area always brings fantastic live music, these days even weeknights are filled with world class live jazz around Puget Sound. So then, a Wednesday night Halloween is due to be full of spooky, funky jazz fun. Rake in the candy for the kids before dark, then get out for some musical treats of your own.

The New Cool: Seattle-Portland Groovin' at Tula's

Seattle's mighty Hammond organ and drums combo of Joe Doria and Tarik Abouzied are friends and collaborators in McTuff, Happy Orchestra and other various line-ups. Their new project includes an icon of Portland's jazz scene, guitarist Dan Balmer, with a new recording and a live show at Tula's Friday, May 18th.

An exciting group with blazing trumpet and sizzling organ trio played opening weekend of the Earshot Jazz Festival at Tula's in Seattle, and highlights from their first set will air on Jazz Northwest  on Sunday, November 15 at 2 p.m. Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streaming at kplu.org.
