Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez took the mound for the final time Thursday night in Seattle. The All-Star pitcher and Cy Young Award winner has thrown a perfect game and a no hitter in the 15 years he has spent in Seattle. But along with those highs came some lows.

KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel talked with Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick about the career of King Felix.

The Mariners host the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend at Safeco Field. The team is coming off a road trip that included a lot of drama.

It’s the topic of this week’s conversation between KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel and Morning Edition Host Kirsten Kendrick.

For the first time since he was drafted by the Mariners in 2005, former American League Cy Young award winner Felix Hernandez has been demoted from the starting rotation to the bullpen. Mariners manager Scott Servais made the announcement Thursday night.

Felix, who pitched a perfect game in 2012, is having the worst season of his career this year as the team is vying for the playoffs.  KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel spoke by phone early Friday morning with KNKX Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick.

The Seahawks' schedule is about to get tougher, and the timing couldn’t be worse. They learned this week that they’ll be without two key players for the rest of the season.

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel said it’s bad news as the team heads to Kansas City to face the Chiefs on Sunday.

Art also says Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez narrowly losing his bid for a second Cy Young Award was "a little bit unfair."

The Mariners may not have made the playoffs, but they made a lot of fans proud by sweeping the best team in baseball over the weekend. They did it with a stellar showing from Felix Hernandez in the final game of the season. It was a performance that could earn The King another pitching crown.

First came the American League Cy Young Award in 2010. Then, last year’s perfect game.

But KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says nothing compares to the outpouring of emotion he witnessed this week at Safeco Field as the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez signed a contract that makes him the highest-paid pitcher in baseball.

They Mariners have now lost 12 straight games, plummeting out of playoff contention for another season.

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says desperate times call for desperate measures. That includes thinking seriously about trading Ichiro Suzuki or Felix Hernandez.

With Major League Baseball's trade deadline looming at the end of the month, and given the Mariners recent plummet from contention, KPLU sports commentator says the M's need to make some big moves.

That means getting rid of some veterans like Ichiro Suzuki and Felix Hernandez ... and their big salaries.

Adding urgency to this move, the Mariners got swept today by the Blue Jays in Toronto, losing 7-to-5. They're losing streak now stands at 12.

Two Mariner pitchers have been elected to the American League All-Star team. However, KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says, neither is expected to play in the game on Tuesday in Phoenix.

Adding insult to injury: One Mariner who's an All-Star veteran was left off the roster this year Ichiro Suzuki.

The Mariners have signed three veteran free agents in the past week.  But the news is not generating much excitement.  Sports commentator Art Thiel tells KPLU’s Kirsten Kendrick that’s because the Mariners are embarking on a rebuilding year, which could have them entertaining offers for star pitcher Felix Hernandez.

The Mariners' Felix Hernandez has won his first Cy Young Award.  He was recognized Thursday as the American League’s best pitcher for the 2010 season.  Sports commentator Art Thiel talked with KPLU’s Kirsten Kendrick about Felix’s honor in this week’s installment of Sports with Art Thiel.
