It took a decade to get there, but Edgar Martinez is headed to Cooperstown.

The legendary designated hitter beloved by Mariners fans was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday, after receiving enough votes in his final year of contention.

In a stats-driven sport like baseball, it seems we know everything there is to know about a player. From batting average to a pitcher's power finesse ratio.

Measuring a player's ability isn't limited to his or her skill. There's also a wealth of information in an athlete's body.

It's a bold move, meant to energize the local fan base. But a Jacksonville baseball team's decision to rename itself the Jumbo Shrimp is meeting with a mixed reaction. Some say they can't wait to buy a team jersey; in other corners, it's being panned like so much scampi. A petition has been started.

The Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 in Game 3 of the World Series in Chicago, after the Indians' pinch hitter Coco Crisp helped break the scoreless deadlock in the top of the seventh inning.

Cleveland now takes a 2-1 game lead in a Series that has featured dominant pitching by the winning team of each game.

After three innings, Game 3 shaped up as a pitchers' duel, with both Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks and Cleveland Indians starter Josh Tomlin allowing no runs.

The boy who narrowly missed being hit in the face by a wayward baseball bat has explained why he was distracted at the game: He was sending a photo of the game to his mom and sister. And he says his first pro baseball game was "amazing."

The best play at this weekend's spring training game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves didn't take place on the field — it was in the stands, where a man's fast reflexes saved a young fan from being hit in the face after a bat hurtled into the stands.

In an instant that's frozen in time, the barrel of the bat looms just inches away from the boy's nose and eyes, with the man's hand and forearm blocking its path.

The Seattle Mariners will hold a “Public Celebration of Life” for late broadcaster Dave Niehaus tomorrow.  Scheduled start is just after 1 p.m. Saturday at Safeco Field.

Family, players and close associates will pay tribute to Niehaus, the only play-by-play announcer the team has ever had.  He died of a heart attack last month at the age of 75.

“I have never been so sad to lose someone I never met.”  The words of one Mariner fan on Facebook at a memorial page for the team’s radio announcer Dave Niehaus.  His death this week from a heart attack has affected a lot of people in the Pacific Northwest in the same way.
