Studio Sessions
Studio Sessions from KNKX Public Radio feature some of the best jazz and blues musicians. Performing from downtown Seattle, we feature artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Gregory Porter, Christian McBride and more! KNKX thanks Jim and Birte Falconer for their support of studio sessions and a free, independent and energetic press, who urge listeners to get involved in their local community, and to support KNKX.

One of the leading flugelhorn players in jazz dropped into the knkx studios to celebrate his recent album "Jazz Noir," and to play three cool tunes with his now-Northwest neighbors.

We hope to see and hear a lot of Dmitri Matheny since he relocated to Centralia, Wash. recently. Teaming with Seattle stalwarts Jay Thomas, Bill Anschell, Phil Sparks and D'Vonne Lewis, we were treated to a beautiful and dramatic medley of film music from his latest, as well as his original tune "Perfect Peaches" and a lovely old tune favored by trumpeter Lee Morgan and many others, "What Now My Love?"

Along the way, Dmitri talked about his move from trumpet to the instrument his mentor Art Farmer called "The Big Horn", and his love for the dramatic noir film music from Chinatown, Vertigo, and Taxi Driver. It was a lovely session with our new neighbor, and promises to be only the first of many.

  • The funk-jazz trio, McTuff did their first KNKX live studio session at 12:15 on an otherwise ordinary afternoon in 2015. Before the performance, McTuff’s leader and organist, Joe Doria, asked if they should "tone things down" since it was early in the day. We said they should follow their collective muse. They did, and they rocked the house.
