Out studio audience had an acapella treat with Redhot & Blue, a 12-piece vocal ensemble from Yale University.
The group kicked off the session with a swinging rendition of “Zoot Suit Riot” featuring bass singer Denis Tse.
The touring group was founded in 1977 and named after the Cole Porter musical and as homage to Porter himself who graduated Yale in 1911. Alto Dani Schulman also doubles as tour manager and described how the group formed and how it’s influences include pop and rock but works within the jazz idiom.
The group next did a slow sultry version of “Fever” ala Peggy Lee featuring soprano Adrianne Owings.
Theater studies major and soprano Lucy Tomasso said she appreciates practicing her musicality and performance as part of the group. But only a quarter of the singers aspire to a musical or performance career. The students major in varied disciplines ranging from computer science to English.
They rounded out the session with Gershwin’s “Summertime” featuring tenor Angel Osorio. Beyonce’s “Halo” was an extra treat at the session’s end with singer soprano Lauren Bond at the helm.
Redhot & Blue tour 3 times a year – during their winter and spring breaks and internationally during the summer. This summer they’ll be in Shanghai, China.
You can find & follow the group on social media including Facebook, Instagram and Spotify.
