Excessive smoke is always illegal, even if a wood stove is your only source of heat

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued its first burn ban of the season.

A large ridge of high pressure off the Pacific coast is bringing stagnant air conditions to the region.

A Stage 1 burn ban goes into effect at 5 p.m. today for Pierce and Snohomish counties and will stay in effect until further notice.

What is a Stage 1 burn ban?

  • No burning is allowed in fireplaces or uncertified wood stoves. The only exception is if a wood stove is a home's only adequate source of heat.
  • No outdoor fires are allowed. This includes recreational fires such as bonfires, campfires and the use of fire pits and chimineas.
  • Burn ban violations are subject to a $1,000 penalty.

Natural gas, propane, pellet and EPA certified wood stoves or inserts are allowed during a Stage 1 burn ban.

State health officials say those who are sensitive to air pollution should remain indoors whenever possible, especially when exercising. Air pollution can trigger asthma attacks and cause problems for people with heart and lung conditions. Children, adults over age 65 and people with diabetes are also at risk.
