Making headlines in the Northwest:

Kitsap County going after tighter shooting regulations

PORT ORCHARD – By this fall, all shooting ranges in the county's unincorporated areas could be required to have a permit to operate, reports the Kitsap Sun. This is a change from the current code, which requires only new shooting ranges apply for a permit.

Kitsap County commissioners requested revisions to the code last month as a result of ongoing tensions surrounding shooting ranges in the community, County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido said.

Many of the proposed changes address issues raised by Central Kitsap residents upset with the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club. The similarities between the complaints and proposed changes were not lost on KRRC Executive Director Marcus Carter.

Off the AP wire: Motorcyclist falls to his death; shooter sought

  • Police are looking for the man who walked up to some parked cars in south Seattle late last night and shot four people, killing one and wounding three. Police say the gunman fled on foot after shooting a 19-year-old woman who died at the scene. She was sitting in one car with a 16-year-old woman who was wounded in an arm and a leg. A man inside another car was wounded and a teenage boy sitting on the hood of another car has a leg wound.
  • A convicted rapist charged with killing a prison guard described to detectives how he sneaked up behind Jayme Biendl in the Monroe Correctional Facility's chapel. Byron Scherf said she first tried to reason with him, but he claimed Biendl had said something earlier that he considered disrespectful to his wife, and that set him off.
  • A motorcycle rider hit the wall on an Interstate 5 on-ramp last night in Seattle, flew over the barrier and fell about 50 feet to his death. The Washington State Patrol says the 37-year-old Seattle man missed a curve on the ramp from Michigan Street to northbound I-5. KOMO-TV reports a second motorcyclist crashed into the barrier at the same time and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Walla Walla sweet onion harvest under way. Grower Ben Cavalli of Cavalli's Onion Acres, told KEPR the crop is smaller this year, because of the cool weather, but he also has some very good-sized onions. The Sweet Onion Festival is this weekend in Walla Walla.

Sentence handed down for cyberstalking girl

Leslie Cote's 12-year-old neighbor was given a deferred sentence for cyberstalking and first-degree computer trespassing, which requires her to stay out of trouble for six months, attend counseling, perform 20 hours of community service and follow other requirements, reports the Seattle Times.

The girl offered a tearful apology in court Wednesday for posting sexually explicit photos and messages on her classmate's Facebook page.

For Leslie and her mother, Tara Cote, the sentence and the apology wasn't enough.

"I feel that they deserve to be punished and they were not," Leslie said after the sentencing in King County Juvenile Court.

Canada: Vancouver loses top rank as most expensive

Toronto has been named the most expensive city to live in Canada, taking the top spot away from Vancouver, according to the Daily Brew on Yahoo News.

Consulting firm Mercer conducted the annual survey that looks at the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing and entertainment among hundreds of other items.

An increase in demand for rental properties leading to a rise in rent in Toronto is the main reason it surpassed Vancouver.
