Three Homeless Groups In King County Receive Foundation Funds

Three agencies serving the homeless in King County have received a $450,000 grant from several Seattle foundations. The money will help continue outreach services for runaway and homeless youth.

Friends of Youth, an agency that serves teens in East King County and one of the grant recipients, will use the grant to support its mobile van that operates at skate parks and malls.

Friends of Youth, along with YouthCare and Auburn Youth Resources, run street outreach programs in 24 cities. Those programs were put in jeopardy after the agencies lost federal grant money.

The Raikes Foundation, Ballmer Family Giving and the Thomas V. Giddens, Jr. Foundation have awarded the $450,000 grant. It's part of a public and private effort to help end youth and young adult homelessness in King County by 2020.

More than 700 young people are homeless or are in unstable housing on any given night in King County, according to the Raikes Foundation.
