The Washington Supreme Court has dealt a blow to a dozen school districts across the state that sought more money for special education. Today, the court said the districts did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the state underfunds the programs, a violation of its constitution.
As KPLU reported in June, the Alliance for Adequate Funding of Special Education was challenging a Court of Appeals ruling. In that decision, the justices ruled the districts had not fully taken into account the state's basic education allocation (BEA).
The decisions come despite a King County Superior Court judge's ruling in February that the state is not fully funding basic education or relying on sources that are stable and dependable. KPLU coverage of that case is available here.
