Energy Spiral by Jason Padgett

"Sound Effect" is your weekly tour of ideas, inspired by the place we live. The show is hosted by KPLU's Gabriel Spitzer. Each week's show explores a different theme. This week we go out in search of silver linings.

Sound Effect Senior Producer Arwen Nicks talks with Rhianon England about why she created a “hearing bucket list” and all the sounds she hopes to hear before she is completely deaf.

After leaving a Tacoma karaoke bar one night, Jason Padgett was brutally attacked by two men. He suffered a concussion and developed post-traumatic stress disorder. He also became one of just a handful of people to develop a condition known as acquired savant syndrome.

Now he’s a mathematical genius. Host Gabriel Spitzer talks with Padgett about his life before and after the attack, and why, if he could somehow go back in time, he would choose to suffer the ordeal all over again.

KPLU’s Bellamy Pailthorp hears from two local climatologists about their differing takes on the silver linings that are part of climate change.

It’s not just every cloud that has a silver lining. Gabriel Spitzer speaks with King County Supervising Librarian Amber Slaven, who curated a list of books with messages of hope amid a backdrop of gloom.
