Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee ranking member Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., speaks during an executive session of the committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019.

Sen. Patty Murray took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Thursday morning to give a speech about the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The Washington Democrat says failing to investigate the actions of the president could set a dangerous precedent for future leaders.

Murray says there are still many questions about the actions of Trump and his associates, and that's why the U.S. House of Representatives was right to start an impeachment inquiry.

"Based just on what we know, it would be a dereliction of duty for Congress not to investigate the grave threats to our country's safety and to our democratic institutions," Murray said. "And if President Trump and his administration have noting to hide, they should stop obstructing. Let Congress do its job and find the facts."

Murray says failing to investigate would essentially green light his behavior for future leaders. She called his behavior unethical. Her speech today emphasized the importance of a complete and thorough investigation by the House. She says the decisions that Congress makes in the coming weeks about impeachment will shape the nation's future stance on the issues involved in the inquiry, including foreign influence and checks on power.
