Seattle School Board Names Former Marysville Leader As Interim Superintendent

Provided by Seattle Public Schools.

The Seattle School Board has named former Marysville School District Superintendent Larry Nyland as its interim superintendent.

The board made the announcement following a special meeting Friday.

Nyland, who was named superintendent of the year by the Washington School Administrators Association in 2007, will replace outgoing José Banda, who has accepted a job in Sacramento, California.

Nyland served as Marysville’s superintendent for nine years before retiring in 2013. He has also worked at Highline Public Schools and Seattle Pacific University. He served as the interim superintendent of the Shoreline School District in 1997.

"We hear from people who worked with Dr. Nyland that he is a brilliant visionary and the most outstanding superintendent they have ever known. One of his many strengths is bringing people together around highly effective improvements and solutions," said Seattle School Board President Sharon Peaslee in a written statement.

Nyland will start his job on Aug. 1, district officials said, and his contract will be ratified at the Aug. 20 board meeting.
