Two jazz performances which took place only a few blocks apart but separated by 53 years in time are featured on this week's Jazz Northwest on 88.5, KPLU.
In the first half of this week's show, The Seattle JazzEd New Works Ensemble is directed by Wayne Horvitz in excerpts from an Art of Jazz concert at the Seattle Art Museum.
The concert, presented by Earshot Jazz featured compositions by Wayne Horvitz, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and others in original arrangements for this ensemble of high school students. The New Works Ensemble is one of several bands organized by Seattle JazzEd to provide opportunity and access for a variety of music instruction and experience directed by some of the top jazz teachers in the area.
The second part of this week's program begins with a new HighNote CD by Ernestine Anderson singing on a live radio broadcast from The Penthouse in Seattle in 1962. The Penthouse, at First and Cherry, hosted most of the major jazz artists active in the 60s who were also heard on live broadcasts from the club produced and mixed by Jim Wilke. Also on this week's show are new releases by Tom Collier, Jason Parker and Thomas Marriott, and news about live jazz in the area this week.
