School of Jazz: Natalie Whitlock as KNKX guest DJ

ABE BEESON / KNKX

Alto saxophonist Natalie Whitlock will join Abe Beeson tonight (April 4)  at 8 p.m. as guest DJ. She is a senior and plays in the jazz band at Edmonds Woodway High School. Listen to the show and read her Q&A and playlist.

Which instrument do you play and why?

I play alto saxophone because when I was young, I wanted to be a part of the jazz band. However, I only played clarinet and bass clarinet at the time. My dad gave me his saxophone that his parents had bought him, and from there... it just took off.

What’s your all-time favorite jazz piece?

My all-time favorite jazz piece is "Stardust" by Duke Ellington.

Who is your jazz hero?

My jazz hero is Johnny Hodges. Not in the sense that he's my favorite saxophonist of all time, but he was the first musician who truly inspired me at a young age.

Why jazz?

Because why classical when you can jazz?
