School of Jazz: Bridget Shelton joins KNKX as guest DJ

Mar 7, 2019

Bass player Bridget Shelton from Bainbridge High School will take over our KNKX studios as guest DJ at 8 p.m. tonight (March 7). Listen to the show and read her Q&A and playlist.

Which instrument do you play and why?

Bass, because you can feel the vibrations of the bass up against your body. It feels like the instrument is singing. The first time I played it I felt a deep connection because of this.

What’s your all-time favorite jazz piece?

"Eye of the Hurricane," by Herbie Hancock

Who is your jazz hero?

Esperanza Spalding. She a powerful woman in jazz. Her voice is stunning and her playing is transformative.

Why jazz?

It leaves so much room for your own thoughts and feelings. Whenever I hear jazz solos I can feel what they are playing, not just notes. In my opinion, it is the ultimate platform to express creativity.

“Hub-Tones,” Kamasi Washington (Heaven and Earth)

“Precious,” Esperanza Spalding (Esperanza)

"Spain," Chick Corea (Light as a Feather)

"Zero Point," Kashmere Stage Band (Texas Thunder Soul)

"But Not For Me," Chet Baker (Chet Baker Sings)

"The Night in Question," R+R=Now (Collagically Speaking)

"Haitian Fight Song," Mingus Big Band (Blues and Politics)
