Live Seattle radio broadcasts by Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis from 1962 provide source material for a new release on the Reel to Real label from Vancouver BC. The broadcasts were part of a long-running weekly radio series featuring major touring jazz artists from the Pioneer Square jazz club. Two complete half-hour broadcasts are presented back to back on the new release "OW!" which was just released on a limited edition double vinyl LP on Record Store Day/Black Friday, and the polycarbonate CD will be released on December 6. Buddy Catlett, who grew up in Seattle, is featured on bass, with Horace Parlan on piano and Art Taylor on drums.
Also new on this week's episode is a new holiday themed album "Laughing All The Way." It's the third Christmas CD by the B3 Kings from Vancouver BC. A sample from an ambitious three-CD set by pianist/composer Marina Albero is also included. Born and raised in Barcelona and now a Seattle area resident, Marina Albero combines elements of flamenco, jazz and classical music in new and imaginative ways. The album "A Life Soundtrack" will have a CD release party at the Royal Room on December 17.
Next week we feature highlights from recent concerts by The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra featuring "Jazz of the Harlem Renaissance."
Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple, Google or Spotify.
