Proposed sale of Reign FC a 'boost' for local team, women's soccer in America

It looks like the Reign FC will have a new majority owner. A deal announced this week with a major European soccer club is expected to be finalized by the end of January 2020. KNKX sports commentator Art Thiel talked with Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick about what this means for the team and its fans.

Thiel said the main thing to keep in mind is that the Reign is not moving from its new home at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

He said the Reign is an established club brand — having been the champions of the National Women's Soccer League in 2014 and 2015 and making it to the semifinals of the playoffs this year.

Thiel said the proposed deal for Olympique Lyonnais to buy the majority share in the Reign FC would create stability and growth for soccer in the region and across the country. He expects this to be the first of many European investments in U.S. women's soccer teams.
