The organ trio (Hammond B3 organ, guitar and drums) is one of the jazz institutions. From the late 50s through the 60s, organ trios were one of the most popular styles of jazz, particularly in hotbeds like Detroit and Philadelphia.
The Seattle band McTuff was formed in 2008 as a tribute to organ greats Jimmy Smith and Captain Jack McDuff, but they've added their own take on the classics and play a lot of original music, too.
McTuff played this month's Art of Jazz concert at The Seattle Art Museum and the concert was recorded for Jazz Northwest .
McTuff plays a long-standing gig at the Seamonster Lounge in Seattle where they've played Tuesday nights for years. They've toured on the West Coast and played festivals including Bumbershoot and the New Orelans Jazz and Heritage Festival. McTuff has released three CDs with the newest one issued this Spring.
The group is led by Joe Doria at the Hammond B3, with Andy Coe on guitar and on this concert reunited with their original drummer, D'vonne Lewis.
