Making Amends: Sound Effect, Episode 79

Jennifer Wing/KNKX
This week on Sound Effect we tell stories of making amends.

This week on Sound Effect, we learn to make amends. We bring you stories of people making amends after a life of crime, siblings making amends before death, and public officials making amends to an entire city.

The Apology Bell

Back in the 1800s, Seattle's first volunteer fire chief wasn't prepared for the Great Seattle Fire. He felt so bad for his mistakes that he apologized to the entire city of Seattle with a present: a giant fire bell. Leonard Garfield from Seattle's Museum of History and Industry tells us about this grand gesture of apology.

Thank You; I Love You

Hospice nurse Rose Bosacker was always close with her older brother, Barry, but as his alcoholism got worse, they had a falling out. She shares the story of how they finally made amends three days before he died and what it means to say, "I forgive you" at the end of your life.

My Daddy's In Jail

Anthony Curcio got famous when he robbed a Brinks truck and escaped with the loot down a river in an inner tube; but it was after he got caught that his life really changed. We hear from Curcio and his wife Emily about how they rebuilt their marriage after a decade of lies and deceit.

When The Police Apologize

Former Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper oversaw the law enforcement response to the chaotic WTO riots of 1999. He directed police to use aggressive crowd control tactics including the use of tear gas on peaceful protestors. Stamper explains why he regrets that decision and how he's apologized to the city since.

The Reparations Project

Seattle artist Natasha Marin created a website for people to make connections across racial boundaries and address white privilege. White people can offer help of any kind and people of color can request it. Two women who participated in the project share their stories of connecting over the website.

Sound Effect is your weekly tour of ideas, inspired by the place we live. The show is hosted by knkx's Jennifer Wing.
