KNKX Holiday Programming

This holiday season KNKX will do something a little different and A LOT more festive! Along with our usual mix of Christmas jazz, we will present NPR holiday music and storytelling specials. Beginning Christmas Eve, we will broadcast a mix of holiday music and storytelling throughout the night and Christmas Day. Our regular schedule of programming, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Fresh Air will return on Thursday, Dec. 26.

Here’s a rundown of all the holiday cheer you’ll hear on KNKX:

Dec. 20

8-9 p.m. Jazz Night In America: A Holiday Celebration: Jazz Night in America brings you holiday classics from their past five seasons — featuring fresh arrangements and entertaining storytelling recorded live from Rose Theater in New York City. You'll hear the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, plus special guest vocalists Catherine Russell and Kenny Washington. Christian McBride hosts.

Dec. 23

7-8 p.m.: Hanukkah Lights:The NPR favorite returns with all new Hanukkah stories. Hosted by Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz.

 

8-9 p.m.: Joy To The World: A Holiday In Pink: The internationally acclaimed “little orchestra" Pink Martini bedecks the airwaves with festive holiday songs from across the globe. From timeless classics to rarely heard gems, hear a multi-denominational, multi-cultural jubilee, overflowing with enough holiday spirit to warm your entire family. Hosted by All Things Considered’s Ari Shapiro.

 

9 p.m.-midnight, KNKX Holiday Jazz

Dec. 24

7-9 p.m.: Origin Records Holiday Special: Matt Jorgenson plays holiday music from the Origin Records catalog, featuring artists from the Pacific Northwest.

 

9-10 p.m.: Jazz Piano Christmas 35: Join the Kennedy Center and NPR Music for this annual holiday tradition highlighting jazz pianists and their favorite seasonal music. The lineup will be announced soon. Felix Contreras hosts.

 

10 p.m.-midnight, KNKX Holiday Jazz

Midnight-4 a.m.: Jazz24

4-6 a.m. Morning Edition

6-9 a.m. Holiday Music and Stories: NPR fills millions of homes each holiday with humor, warmth, and a host of festive voices. We’ll hear the best and most requested holiday stories, including David Sedaris’ “Santa Land Diaries” interspersed with music of the season from the KNKX holiday library. Joy, hope, and childhood memories overflow as we hear music and stories of the season.

9-11 a.m. Origin Records Holiday Special Rebroadcast: Matt Jorgenson plays holiday music from the Origin Records catalog, featuring artists from the Pacific Northwest.

11 a.m.-Noon KNKX Holiday Jam Rebroadcast: Recorded live from Meydenbauer Center Theatre, Bellevue. This year we're doing something new--presenting Vince Guaraldi's music from A Charlie Brown Christmas performed by the Bill Anschell Trio with the Bellevue High School vocal jazz group, the Bellairs, kicking off the show singing their rendition of "Christmas Time is Here."  Bill and the trio follow up the Charlie Brown program with a few holiday classics. Abe Beeson hosts.

6-8 p.m. Paul Winter's 38th Annual Winter Solstice Celebration: Celebrate the return of the sun — and the warming of the heart with Paul Winter's Annual Winter Solstice Celebration. On the darkest night of the year, we head back to New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear an encore performance of The Paul Winter Consort and the glorious Cathedral Pipe Organ. The performance brings traditional holiday favorites and sounds from around the world with special guests Fabianna Cozza, Gary Booker, Theresa Thomasson, Paul McCandless, Eugene Freisen and the percussion troupe Forces of Nature. WNYC's John Schaefer hosts.
