Jazz Northwest: Recent music from Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.

This week on Jazz Northwest we feature new and recent releases from Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., musicians.

The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble plays "From Maxville to Vanport" from a CD about two nearly forgotten towns in Northern Oregon that were built for and populated by African-American laborers.

Also on this show is Portland guitarist Dan Balmer's new CD. Seattle trumpet players Jay Thomas and Michael Van Bebber, as well as Thomas Marriott have new releases on this week's show. Vancouver saxophonist Cory Weeds and singer Karin Plato also are represented by recent releases.

Jazz Northwest is a weekly survey of the Northwest jazz scene by host Jim Wilke, airing Sundays at 2 p.m. on KNKX and streaming at knkx.org. About half of the programs are new location recordings.

Coming up, a concert of Sacred Music of Duke Ellington with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and an Art of Jazz concert by the Kate Olson Quartet at Seattle Art Museum. Previously broadcast programs are available for streaming at jazznw.org. Listeners may also subscribe to a podcast of the program.

Jim has been a fixture on Seattle radio since 1961. He was the host of Jazz After Hours on Public Radio International from 1984-2014. Currently Jim has been producing Jazz Northwest for KNKX since 1988. This weekly program focuses on the regional jazz scene and frequently includes performances Jim records on location for Jazz Northwest.
