This week, Jazz Northwest includes a preview of The 26th Annual Earshot Jazz Festival which begins October 10 and runs through November 11. Dozens of performances will take place in various venues in and around the Seattle area.
On this Jazz Northwest, John Gilbreath of Earshot Jazz provides some background on the first part of this year's Earshot Festival. Opening night just happens to be Thelonious Monk's birthday and a special concert in Seattle's Town Hall will mark the occasion. Ten pianists will each play a piece of Monk's music, and a special ten piece band plays the arrangements performed in New York's Town Hall in 1959 by an orchestra led by Thelonious Monk. One piece from that concert will be included on this Jazz Northwest.
Also on this week's Jazz Northwest are new releases by singer/songwriter Carmen Lundy, pianist Larry Fuller and the Tom Varner Nonet and news about other live jazz events in the coming week. Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 2 PM Pacific and is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and streams at kplu.org. The program is also available as a podcast following the broadcast.
Next week: A concert by The Benny Green Trio recorded at Jazz Port Townsend in July of 2014. John Gilbreath will return on October 19 with a second preview of the latter part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
