Jazz Northwest: Brad Turner and Ernie Watts headline

Jun 9, 2019

New releases by Vancouver, B.C., trumpet player and composer Brad Turner and Los Angeles tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts are featured on this week's Jazz Northwest

Brad Turner is one of Canada's most in-demand trumpet players, with three Juno Awards for previous CDs, and a new release that reunites a legendary quartet with guest Seamus Blake, another prodigious talent who honed his music in Vancouver before becoming a New York resident. Also new on this week's show, L.A. saxophonist Ernie Watts' new release "Home Light," which he introduced at the Ballard Jazz Festival last week in Seattle.

The show also includes music from Susan Pascal's quintet with Brian Monroney playing at Tula's in Seattle, as well as a preview of an all-star group, The Cookers, who play next week at Jazz Alley, and The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra playing "One Mint Julep" from a 1990 concert.  The SRJO will pay tribute to Ray Charles with concerts on June 15, 16 and 17.  News of other upcoming performances in the Seattle area are included as well.

Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, AppleGoogle or Spotify.
