Jazz Northwest for August 11

Aug 11, 2013

"This isn't just midsummer's madness,

a passing glow, a moment's gladness,

This is love, I knew it from the night we met. "

Those are Mack Gordon's lyrics for Harry Warren's song, "This Is Always".   It's one of the songs included on Jay Clayton's new CD of Harry Warren songs, "Harry Who?" and it aired on Jazz Northwest this Sunday, August 11 at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and kplu.org.

Jay Clayton is a much-valued vocal musician, a term encompassing more than just "singer", and she's also a very active music educator.  She taught at Cornish College in Seattle for twenty years before resuming her career in New York.  Widely known as an avant vocal improviser with extended techniques, she's also a skilled singer of standards from the Great American Songbook as beautifully illustrated in her new CD, to be released on August 13 on Sunnyside Records.

Also on this week's show are Phil Kelly & the Northwest Prevailing Winds, Steve Griggs, The Jazz Police, the Cookers and others, with news about best bets for live jazz around Seattle in the coming week.

Jazz Northwest focuses on the regional jazz scene and is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU and kplu.org.

Next week (August 18), poll-winning clarinetist Anat Cohen leads her quartet with Dawn Clement, Chuck Deardorf and Jeff Hamilton in a concert at Jazz Port Townsend 2013.
