Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah — How To Stretch Music

New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah has a new record out.  It’s called ‘Stretch Music,’ which is a perfect title.  Not only does Christian stretch the idea of ‘jazz’ over all genres of music with this release, he also stretches how a record can be heard.

‘Stretch Music’ has its own app—which turns the album into the first interactive media player as a record.  This means that the casual listener, or a musician who wants to play along with the songs, can listen to the instruments he or she selects.

For example, if you’re a trumpet player and want to play your ‘thing’ over Christian’s songs, you can pull the trumpet out of the mix while you play.  Then put Christian back in and listen to him do it.  In this live studio session, Christian and his band play us to two songs from the new release.   In between, he treats us to a song he rarely plays anymore.  It’s called ‘Kind Of New,’ written by his uncle, saxophonist Donald Harrison, and first recorded by Christian when he was 16 years old.

Members of Christian's sextet are Braxton Cook on alto sax, Lawrence Fields on piano, Kris Funn on bass, Corey Fonville ondrums and Dominic Minix on guitar.
