Charter School Applicants Pitch Their Proposals in Seattle, Tacoma

Those wanting to open up a charter school in the Seattle and Tacoma areas will be making public presentations over the next week and a half.

The state’s Charter School Commission is holding six public forums, which will help the commission decide which schools will open over the next two years.

Charter schools are independent public schools operated by nonprofit groups and free to students. Supporters say they would provide learning opportunities that are different than what’s available in public schools.

A total of 19 groups have applied to the commission. Proposed schools range from a high school focused on sports and fitness to a K-5 school geared to children living in poverty.

In Spokane, three groups are asking the Spokane school district to approve charter schools in that city.
