The last set of the opening night Celebration of the Drum at this year's Ballard Jazz Festival is featured this week on Jazz Northwest. The Nu Trio brought considerable soul and energy to cap the night. Featuring Brian Kirk on drums Nathan Breedlove on trumpet and Phil Sparks on bass, the trio played music by Brian Kirk and modern jazz classics by Booker Little, John Hicks, Mal Waldron, and Woody Shaw.
The Nu Trio was the last of four drummer-led bands to perform on this Celebration of the Drum opening this year's festival. The trio is also one of the rotating groups playing Phil Sparks' Friday night Happy Hour at The Latona Pub in Seattle.
The 16th annual Ballard Jazz Festival took place May 16-19 at various locations including a Jazz Walk with eight venues and a Main Stage concert in the new Nordic Museum auditorium. John Bishop and Matt Jorgensen are the artistic and managing directors of the Ballard Jazz Festival. This concert was recorded at the Conor Byrne Pub on May 16.
