Bob Edwards Remembers Carl Kasell

Bob Edwards congratulates Carl Kasell as he is inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.

Longtime NPR newscaster Carl Kasell died Tuesday at the age of 84. Public radio listeners are mourning the loss of a steadfast and reliable voice. The people who worked with him are mourning a friend.

KNKX talked with Bob Edwards, who spent decades working the early shift with Carl as they broadcast Morning Edition. Bob shared some of his favorite memories.

Interview Highlights

On Carl's work with Wait Wait Don't Tell Me:  "More than a journalist, Carl was a broadcaster. And I think he missed, all those years, not being able to entertain. And when he got to Wait Wait and he could do all the voices and the silliness, he was in his glory. He just loved it."

On Carl's relationship with the audience: "People would come to the building and want to meet Carl, and he would not feel imposed upon at all. He would greet them and chat them up and make them feel welcome. He would really get into people, and make them feel like they were the only ones in the room -- that he was there to see them."
