Since 2005, KNKX's School of Jazz has provided mentorship, learning and performance opportunities to Western Washington middle school, high school and college jazz students. A cornerstone of the station's signature community outreach program, it has directly impacted thousands of jazz students, band directors and professional musicians. School of Jazz is sponsored by BECU.

Anton Schwartz Shines With Lynnwood High School Jazz All-Stars

In his fourth visit to the KNKX Studio Sessions, we finally put saxman Anton Schwartz together with one of our School of Jazz all-star combos.

Lynnwood High School was the beneficiary of Anton's mentoring, and his advice to the teenage musicians sounded just as applicable to life: "You gotta be where you are, not where you want to be. By perfecting where you are, you'll get to where you want to go."

The jazz students at Lynnwood High are well on their way, with terrific chemistry within the group, and advanced listening skills that helped them work in the expert chops of Mr. Schwartz.

Picking a pair of jazz standards to start their session, the band finished with a clever arrangement of "The Adventure Song" by a Seattle-area group called 45th Street Brass.

One of the two talented trumpet players in the group, Drew Thomas, followed his performance a week later with an hour as our School of Jazz guest DJ.

Our session audience, including a gaggle of very proud parents, were reminded again how lucky we are to have such adventurous and bold musicians helping to lead jazz into the future.

Abe grew up in Western Washington, a 3rd generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
