Saxophonist and composer Kate Olson brought her original music to this month's Art of Jazz concert presented by Earshot at The Seattle Art Museum. She is part of a cadre of Seattle musicians who've been drawn to the area by the freedom to explore new forms of expression in music and theater.
Initially drawn to jazz after encountering soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and the music of Thelonious Monk, the soprano sax became her principal instrument; she also plays tenor sax. Kate leads her own KO Ensemble with piano, bass and drums, as well as KO Electric and the duo Syrinx Effect, with trombonist Naomi Siegel. She also works on others' projects, plays sessions at Cafe Racer and played in the band for the Burlesque Nutcracker at The Triple Door. She was featured in the cover story for the January edition of Earshot Jazz.
Joining Kate Olson in this concert are multifaceted pianist Tim Kennedy, bassist Geoff Harper and drummer Max Wood.
The Art of Jazz concerts are curated by John Gilbreath of Earshot Jazz, and presented on the second Thursday of each month at The Seattle Art Museum. There is no charge for admission to the concerts. The next concert on Feb. 14 will feature the duo of singer Kendra Shank and guitarist John Stowell in romantic songs from the Great American Songbook.
