Cuban drummer/composer/bandleader Yissy García is breaking new ground with her group Bandancha; a heady mix of jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms and electronic music. She's part of the wave of young, foward-looking artists creating the new sound of Cuban music.

Yissy is the daughter of percussionist Bernardo García, who was one of the founding members of the Cuban supergroup Irakere, and a member of trumpeter Artuto Sandoval's band. Cuban musical traditions and world music innovations co-exist peaceably in this family.
She started winning performance awards starting at age 15, and after graduating from conservatory, Yissy became the drummer for the best known Cuban all-women orchestra, Anacaona.
Yissy is touring right now with both Jane Bunnett's Maqueque and her own Bandancha, including performances and clinics at SFJazz this week, and appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival and the San Francisco Jazz Fest.
