A Thousand Blended Notes: A Life of Birds and Poems

Join us for the 2022 Bird Fest Keynote Address with Derek Sheffield. This is a HYBRID event. You may join us in the Wenatchee River Institute's Red Barn or livestream virtually via Zoom (link below). Registration is not required for this free event.

Poet and birder Derek Sheffield will give a presentation on the unique and ancient connection that exists between poets and birds. This talk will combine personal observations with more general ones and include poems by Sheffield in addition to those by other contemporary poets such as Mary Oliver, Eamon Grennan, Drew Lanham, Naomi Shihab Nye, Gary Snyder, Jan Wallace, and Pattiann Rogers.

Derek Sheffield has been watching birds and making poems in Cascadia for thirty years. His collection, "Not for Luck," was selected by Mark Doty for the Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize. His other books include "Through the Second Skin," finalist for the Washington State Book Award, "Dear America: Letters of Hope, Habitat, Defiance, and Democracy," and, with coeditors Elizabeth Bradfield and CMarie Fuhrman, "Cascadia: A Field Guide through Art, Ecology, and Poetry" (Mountaineers Books 2023). His awards include the James Hearst Poetry Prize judged by Li-Young Lee, the Hazel Lipa Environmental Chapbook Award judged by Debra Marquart, a special mention in the 2016 Pushcart Anthology, and fellowships from Artist Trust and the Sustainable Arts Foundation. When he isn’t editing for Terrain.org or teaching at Wenatchee Valley College, Sheffield can often be found birding in the woods or rivers along the eastern slopes of the Cascades near Leavenworth, Washington. Visit him at www.dereksheffield.com.

This event is supported by A Book For All Seasons. Derek's books will be available for purchase at the event.
