Two jazz quartets at the Celebration of the Drum opening the Ballard Jazz Festival last month will be featured this week on Jazz Northwest. Drummer Stefan Schatz leads the first group, with Thomas Marriott, trumpet, Jeremy Bacon, piano and Paul Gabrielson, bass.  Stefan Schatz recently relocated to Seattle from his birthplace in New York City.  They play music by jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, Horace Silver, and Clifford Brown.  The second group on this program includes young musicians from Garfield, Cornish College, and the University of Washington.

Not much of a post this week, I've dedicated my writing to preview the Ballard Jazz Festival. I hope to see you in the clubs Saturday night!

May 16 - 19, the Ballard Jazz Festival presents a big change in scheduling this year, but you'll find the same fantastic lineup of the Northwest's finest jazz musicians and internationally acclaimed talent over 4 nights in the city's increasingly crowded fishing village. Let's take a look at the changes, and preview some of my "must-see" performances.

On the afternoon of day three of this year's Ballard Jazz Festival, the 10-clubs-for-one-cover Jazz Walk, KNKX welcomed a trio of Northwest jazz all-stars that reminded us how lucky jazz fans are in this corner of the world.

April 2011 is the 10th anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), presented by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.

The annual celebration pays tribute to jazz both as an historic and living art form, and encourages educators, jazz societies, musicians and the general public throughout the country to take part.
